We rarely notice

The dance of an individual leaf

Caught in the kiss of a gentle breeze.

It’s so beautiful how it flexes with surrendered grace

Catching the warm rays of the sun’s glance

Beauty in motion.

They have no choice, attached to their lifeline, their root

No audible complaint is heard by the human ear

Yet, do they scream to be freed or know that is the end?

Thus they cling with all their might through storm and calm

Until that final day when the tree undresses

Dropping to the dirt this year’s wardrobe

A separation forever

A cycle complete.

Such a short intense life

A life full of giving

Unrecognized year after year.

Dear dancing leaf

I thank you for your beauty

I thank you for the cleaner air I breathe

I thank you for your shade and protection from the rain

I thank you for your sacrifice as you create organic matter on the earth I walk

I thank you for our short time together

May your last days be full of joyful grace

I will miss you….
